managing photos online

I use iphoto to load the images from the camera, then rsync the files to linux The problem is this loses iphoto metadata. iphoto doesn't use the exif metadata in jpeg files, I guess because it supports more than jpeg. But, do we? Exif could be useful to hold captions, and to organize them (filenames are inadequate -- I've already got several "DSCF0001.JPG" from different cameras and whatnot).
